| Quote: | After it confirms plans to close in Memphis, Sitel expands East Tennessee call center
By Tom Bailey Jr., The Commercial Appeal
Why would Sitel, the call-center company, be adding jobs in East Tennessee just after announcing it’s closing its Memphis operation?
“What’s going on in one doesn’t necessarily have any bearing on what’s going on in another,” Andrew Kokes, vice president of communication for the Nashville-based company, said this week.
Companies contract with Sitel to outsource their customer service and other call center operations.
Sitel announced Monday that it’s hiring an additional 200 employees at its 11-year-old center in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
Sitel confirmed last week that it’s closing the five-year-old center at 1699 Sycamore View in Memphis, a place that employed 775 a few years ago.
The difference, Kokes said, is that the companies served out of the Oak Ridge center are growing and the ones served in Memphis, described as health care and communication businesses, have been hurt by the economy.
Sitel has 500 customers and 140 call centers worldwide. |
